The tech billionaire wants to make X the “most valuable brand on Earth.”

Many people were surprised when Twitter suddenly changed its name to X, but it seems that Elon Musk has been planning a big change for the site for a while.

Here’s what we know about how he plans to change the old “Twitter” and what that might mean for crypto.

In a Tuesday tweet, Musk said that X Corp. bought Twitter to speed up X’s growth and to “ensure freedom of speech,” which was one of the billionaire’s main goals when he bought the platform last year.

When it was just 140-character messages going back and forth, like birds tweeting, the name made sense, the investor said. But because the site has a lot of new Features (like long-form video) and more are on the way, he has decided to “say goodbye to the bird.”

“In the months to come, we will add comprehensive communications and the ability to conduct your entire financial world,” he added.

In an interview this week, Musk talked more about X’s financial goals. He said that it could become “half of the world’s financial system” and the “most efficient database for the thing that is money.”

His words have made people wonder if some crypto-financial connections could be part of his plans. The business owner’s favorite cryptocurrency, Dogecoin, is getting a lot of attention, especially since he added the memecoin’s logo to the location field of his X page on Tuesday.

On Monday, Twitter CEO Linda Yaccarino said that X will be “powered by AI,” joining a fast-growing trend among big tech companies like OpenAI, Google, and most recently Apple.

She wrote, X will be the platform that can do, well, everything.

Will This Ruin Twitters Brand?

Musk has a long past with the letter X in his business life. He bought X.com in 1999, owns SpaceX, and tried to change the name of Paypal to “X” more than a decade ago.

Critics have said that his plan to promote the letter by dropping Twitter’s well-known name will come back to bite him in the end. Musk is sure that X will become an even stronger brand on its own, though.

“X will become the most valuable brand on Earth. Make my words,” he said.
